Problem :
I tried installing windows XP on my Windows 7 as a second boot system and screwed up the file system. I was unable to access win 7 as the XP install caused a blue screen stop error message. After repairing the file system to where I could access the drive externally I now get a missing or currupt hal.dll message.
I have ordered repair disks from HP to restor the image drive I have on drive D:. I fear that it won't let me because of the hal.dll error though. Is there any way that I might be able to restore win. 7 or am I going to have to format and do a clean install?
Solution :
You might be able to access the D: HP Recovery Restore partition by Tapping the F-11 key when the system boots while the HP Logo screen is showing.
If you are able to access the D: partition, you may be able to put the system back as it was when shipped from HP.
You would loose all the data you have installed since you received the system but it's worth a try, since you cannot access the system as it is now.
Just a headsup, It is recommended to install the oldest operating system first and then the newer operating system, if you want to dual boot a system with two operating system installed. Windows XP uses a different boot loader (boot.ini) than the Windows 7 boot manager.
